End of life experiences within sociological research have been described as largely undifferentiated. Glenny’s Howarth (2007) paper ‘Whatever happened to social class? An examination of the neglect of working class cultures in the sociology of death’ (Health Sociology Review 16 (5): 425-435) draws attention to the fact that sociological literature has privileged middle-class understandings of end of life over other understandings. Eight years have passed since the date of its publication and few scholars namely those from non-Anglophone countries have provided insights on how class influences end of life experiences. The ways in which these experiences are shaped by gender and ethnicity have also not been given sufficient attention. There is the need to recognise and acknowledge diversity amongst the dying and the dying process. The guest editors of this special edited volume invite contributions, whether theoretical or empirical, drawing on a range of perspectives from the social sciences working at the intersections of history, anthropology, sociology and public health that explores the interplay of class, gender and ethnicity within end of life experiences. We particularly welcome scholars who have explored these topics within European and non-European regions or countries to submit their papers for this Edited Volume.

Please send an abstract between 500 to 750 words, along with a short biographical statement, and authors’ institutional affiliation by the 13rd November 2015 to [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] with the reference Edited Volume Contribution.
