Project archivist
£26,500 for 12 months full-time, fixed term contract
The Britten–Pears Foundation, based in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, holds a Designated collection comprising the archives of composer Benjamin Britten as well as papers of related individuals and organisations.
Following an award from the National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives we are looking for an archivist to carry out the project ‘Hopes, dreams and difficulties’: the archives of Imogen Holst.
The Britten-Pears Foundation acquired the archive of Imogen Holst in 2008. The collection principally comprises the personal papers, writings, working files, music manuscripts and published music of Imogen Holst, 1907-1984, but also includes important personal papers and music manuscripts of her father Gustav. The archive represents the most significant father-daughter relationship in 20th century British music and culture, and tells the story of two creative and professional lives that added immeasurably to the democratization of music-making during this period.
The role of the archivist will be to catalogue and help promote the collection. The successful candidate will have an archives qualification and cataloguing experience, be well-organised and motivated. Experience of archive database systems, such as CALM, and of supervising volunteers will be advantageous. An interest in twentieth-century music and culture would also be an advantage.
