Using linked hospital and death records for health services research: example of chronic conditions and respiratory infections in children who die
Linked data from hospitals and death registration have been used for several years in the UK for studies in clinical epidemiology and monitoring hospital mortality rates. There is now increasing interest in using these data to answer a wider set of research questions, particularly since linkage can now be extended to primary care data and other health and non-health datasets. We used death records linked to hospital admission records from England, Scotland and Wales to estimate the role of chronic conditions and respiratory tract infections in childhood mortality. Building on our findings from this project, I will demonstrate how linkage to hospital records can be used to enhance and validate death certification data. I will also discuss some challenges in using these linked data, including reporting delay for deaths and changes in coding depth over time.
* Please note earlier than normal start time *
Room: Seminar Room Y (Room 8.43N), Level 8, Worsley Building (Building 95 on campus map), University of Leeds, Leeds. Starting 3:30pm until 4:30pm with Teas/Coffees available from 3pm.
