Subject: Re: Proportion of accessible rooms?
Hi Anna,
Not a direct answer to your question but from having worked with students who are blind or visually impaired using private student accommodation, the following points have come up.
1) The network of corridors (common to large buildings like these) can be difficult to navigate so ensuring tonal contrast and inclusive wayfinding is used throughout the whole complex will be beneficial.
2) Having to do laundry in a separate laundry room is difficult or impossible especially if payment is by machine so being able to provide a washing machine inside the accommodation would be good.
3) Another issue can be taking rubbish out, finding the bin room and the bin. Maybe students could request rubbish collection if needed?
4) Last but probably the most important is the social aspect that accessible rooms should be provided in shared accommodation to allow for making friends... we all know the social life is more important than studying :-)
Hope that's of help.
Best wishes,
Claire

Subject: Proportion of accessible rooms?
Dear All,
I’ve been asked by a colleague in our Accommodation team if there are any recognised standards for the proportion of designated ‘accessible’ (part M pack en suite) rooms that we should be providing in halls of residence for disabled students? Whilst we can look at the numbers of students we have, and therefore the demand for this type of accommodation, we are interested in if there are any official standards indicating the proportion we should be aiming for?
Many thanks,
Anna
