Dear all,
thanks for the initiative and for discussing and improving it; I think
this is very important to speak out about.
What we are witnessing seems to pit murderous religious
fundamentalists against those advocating an equally violent response
while grinding up liberty, democracy, and liberal society in between.
I feel compelled, however, to add that it remains necessary to address
the threat posed by militant Islamism. Sure, this includes addressing
what makes people susceptible to religious fundamentalism in the first
place, but also how and from whom these organizations receive
financial and political support, and why the so-called IS's
blood-thirsty propaganda campaigns seem to work so exceedingly well.
Especially from a complex systems perspective, this seems to call for
different measures than the typical calls for brute force military
intervention the success of which is highly doubtful at best. What has
prompted the rise of right-wing parties in Europe is not just the
terrorism but that political leaders and liberal society as a whole
come off as utterly speechless and helpless in the face of the ongoing
civil wars and the repeated terrorist attacks.
I understand that the statement should remain very brief, so I am not
sure if this can or should be represented there.
Best wishes,
Torsten
