Jacob,
"On the other hand, here's a worst-case scenario: someone has a dataset from an undamaged crystal with 20-fold multiplicity, but decides to truncate it down to 4-fold in order to lower Rmerge to "acceptable" levels. This would be scientifically dead wrong, and would be motivated only by the spectre of Rmerge."
$statistic can be abused or misinterpreted, so it should be *banned* is not an argument I can support, though would be popular in the UK with certain sections of the wider community. One thing I feel is we should on the one hand be endeavouring to teach people joining MX what the statistics actually *mean* and on the other hand defending exceptional values of these statistics when they may be justified, for example Rmerge >> 100% in the outer shell where clearly including the data improves the refinement. Rpim and Rmeas are also worthy statistics which tell you different things.
The onus is on all of us to teach people where possible the true meaning of all of the statistics, and to defend them against the "Rmerge police" at every opportunity.
Best wishes Graeme
