Archive Volunteer Placement:
Are you interested in gaining experience and knowledge of the day to day activities of a working archive? We have an exciting opportunity for a volunteer placement to help the Historic England Archive to preserve our unique collection of historic measured drawings. Alongside this you would help us to make available newly acquired photographic collections. These are on-going projects which will allow us to provide similar placement opportunities throughout the coming year.
Key tasks:
• Rehousing large format drawings
• Maintaining a log of the preserved drawings to aid future conservation planning
• Rehouse and create finding aids to newly acquired photographic collections
Hours:
Each placement will take place between 3 and 4 days a week, over a 6 week period at our our Swindon office - The Engine House, Fire Fly Avenue, Swindon, SN2 2EH.
Time Frame:
Placement option 1 - 12th January 2016 to 19th February 2016
Placement option 2 - 7th March 2016 to 15th April 2016.
More dates will be available after April 2016.
Recommended Skills and Qualities:
• Close attention to detail and accuracy
• A good range of IT skills
• Ability to work both independently and under supervision
• Good manual dexterity and an ability to handle delicate objects with care
• An interest in pursuing a career as an archive professional
Particular Circumstances:
• Some of your time would be spent working in cold conditions (16°C)
• Some of your work will involve wearing vinyl or nitrile gloves
Support and Training:
• Practical training in the identification of drawing processes will be provided, along with methods of rehousing large format drawings
• Practical training on how to rehouse photographic collections, and how to create finding aids for our users
• A member of staff will be available to answer queries that arise, and to assist where necessary
• Within agreed limits volunteers may be reimbursed for local travel between home and the placement location or for local accommodation costs for the duration of the placement
