In this session we seek to facilitate a discussion on what are true public spaces, and reveal challenges and complexities in creating public spaces through planning and design. Interesting issues in this context are the politics and democratic role of public spaces; participation in and conflict over the use of public spaces; planning, design and re-design of public spaces; the way public spaces are actually used; the discourse on public space; and interpretations and meanings of public spaces.
Possible themes include the following:
- Theoretical and empirical contributions discussing on what constitutes true public spaces
- Conflict over the design and use of public space (for example between urban planners, entrepreneurs and inhabitants)
- The role municipal role in the development of public space, as urban entrepreneur, facilitator and coordinator within a regime of multilevel governance
-The role of cultural entrepreneurs in the use of public spaces in the city
-The role of housing policies and gentrification
-Knowledge and discourse in the planning, transformation and design of public spaces
-The role of architecture and architects/landscape architects in the design of public spaces
-How public spaces and life between buildings are part of architectural design projects
-At what stages in a design project the role of public, or semi-public, spaces is considered
-How architects envisage social practices and diversities in their design
-How and in which cases public spaces are limited and restricted in urban planning projects in general and architectural projects in particular.
-To what extent and how the design of public space, and the way this is implemented, could lead to social inclusion or exclusion
