A provisional Classification of Workplace Zones for England and Wales (COWZ-EW) has been released by University of Southampton and is available from http://cowz.geodata.soton.ac.uk/ . Users can also explore COWZ-EW visually using the DataShine interface: http://cowz-ew.datashine.org.uk/ .
COWZ-EW is a geodemographic classification of the characteristics of Workplace Zones (WZs) based on data from the 2011 Census of England and Wales. It classifies WZs based on their similarity in terms of a range of census variables. COWZ-EW was produced by the University of Southampton in collaboration with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and is freely and openly available under an Open Government Licence.
Users have expressed a strong interest in obtaining the results of the classification as soon as possible: this England and Wales version is therefore being released in order to allow users to explore and experiment with it ahead of production of a UK-wide version.
Users are encouraged to download and explore COWZ-EW, and to provide feedback to the research team via [log in to unmask] Feedback on the following would be particularly helpful:
- Do the categories make sense 'on the ground' in your area?
- Do the names and profiles fit the characteristics of the area?
- Are there any obvious issues which might be related to the quality of the underlying WZ data and/or boundaries in your area?
- Is the level of subdivision (i.e. the number of supergroups and groups) appropriate for your area and useful for your purposes?
- For what types of applications do you envisage yourself/your organisation using COWZ-EW?
