This spring, two devastating earthquakes struck Nepal, killing over 8,600 people and leaving at least two million Nepalis homeless. Did years of disaster risk reduction (DRR) efforts prevent further loss and destruction? And can DRR help rebuild Nepal to better withstand future disasters?
Taking place the day after the International Day for Disaster Reduction, this event will launch the revised Good Practice Review 9 on DRR, a guide for humanitarian and development practitioners.
With panels in both London and Kathmandu, speakers will examine not only the immediate response to the Nepal earthquakes but also long-term issues of preparedness, conflict and governance.
Panel:
Wendy Fenton – Humanitarian Practice Network Coordinator
Jamie McGoldrick – UN Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative, Nepal (via videolink)
John Twigg – Senior Research Associate, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College London (UCL)
