Hi all, please see below and attached the info for PhD funding application. This is a prestigious scheme but also very competitive. I am happy to work with any qualified candidates to put forward an application in critical discourse studies specially on digital platforms and social media .
Please circulate this to any potential candidate that you might know.

Subject: AHRC studentships in Media and Communication 2015/16 and also ESRC in 2016
Dear all,
Good news: Media and Communications has been added to Newcastle University's list of subject areas for the Northern Bridge studentship competition. The competition has just gone live. http://www.northernbridge.ac.uk/studentships/ (+ see advertisement below and the AHRC subject area above). This is on the back of our success in the REF. I'd be grateful if you could put out feelers to identify potentially outstanding applicants that you can work with to develop a submission. Likely and typical candidates will be students who have a first class honours degree and already have a distinction at MA level (most MA students find it v difficult to work up an application while still doing an MA).
Usual criteria apply to potential PhD supervisors: they will need to have completions or act as second supervisors. As you know, the competition is fierce with only students with first class honours and MA distinctions likely to have a chance. And though the process is time consuming, it is v. prestigious. The process goes through several stages which are outline din the first link. I will keep you posted on the stages to go through. I will advertise on MeCCSA and ECREA, but please advertise wherever you think is appropriate too. http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AMC481/phd-studentships-in-the-arts-and-humanities/
Regarding ESRC, I've had a meeting with Peter Hopkins who heads ESRC studentships, and we are in the process of being given our own Media and Communication 1+3 pathway on this as well. It involves the completion of the paperwork for an MA Media and Society (which draws on existing modules), which Liviu and James kick-started last semester. Then we should be on board for February 2016. Again, will keep you informed. Meanwhile, if you have any queries, do let me know.
Best wishes,
Deborah
