Dear all,
I'm doing some freelance work for Elsevier's Library Connect (See last year's infographic/poster based on my altmetrics work: http://libraryconnect.elsevier.com/articles/2014-06/librarians-and-research-impact-download-and-share-new-infographic-0 )
I'm looking out for stories of academic libraries/librarians who use alt/bibliometrics and persepectives from current practitioners. I've shared below some library roles that I think involve some understanding of these metrics, with quotations from recent job advertisements, which you might like to comment on: is there a need for knowledge of alt & bibliometrics for each of these roles? Are there roles that I should include?
Also, I'd be very glad to hear of real stories of use at your library. If you've already published or blogged about your use of metrics at your library, then please do shout on this list! Or alternatively, you could reply with bitesize answers to:
1 - Job title
2 - knowledge of such metrics needed
3 - use made of such metrics in role
4 - which 2-3 metrics scores are MOST important, in which context
For example:
1 - Academic Support Librarian
2 - sources of metrics data that researchers can turn to
3 - reference to sources made in training sessions for PhD students and new staff : guides to the sources in written support material
4 - Journal rankings (JCR/SJR) when choosing where to publish: a paper's citation counts and alerts on Web of Science/GScholar as a sign of its influence in the field: an individual's h-index (on all sources, to find the highest!)
I can keep answers anonymous if you choose to reply to me privately. All answers will contribute to future guide materials from Library Connect, for the Library community, which of course I will post on the list.
Finally, I wish you all a smooth Autumn term. If such a thing exists!
best wishes,
Jenny Delasalle
