Ibby - your position might be clearer if you stated it. Do you believe

that FC is scientifically supported and ABA is not?

The oft-stated belief that supported typing is somehow analogous to climate

change, the holocaust, or Wakefield's vaccination scam appears to seem

clever to some people. I can see why it would, if the people had trouble

understanding research methods and goodness-of-fit. These people probably

also thoughtlessly believe ABA is therapy for autism, "because science,"

which pretty much marks them as non-scientists.

FC is or has been used with folks other than autistic. In fact, at one

point that was a selling point: that is, that it was supposed to work with

many, not only those with autism.

Saying that DJ is not autistic as a response to the post that Bob

Williams-Findley posted could be construed as a way to muddy the waters,

since FC was used with DJ. However, reports seem to indicate that he was

non-verbal (in the sense of speaking recognizable words) and was unable to

"type" without the help of Anna Stubblefield, who was convicted of two

counts of gross sexual abuse of that person.

I do begin to understand the frustration that some who work in other areas

have when people, in spite of valid scientific evidence to the contrary,

continue to believe that vaccines "cause" autism, or that the Holocaust did

not really occur.

There is a need to be civil and provide context. Personal point scoring

serves no good purpose.

So: let's consider this: "By 2001, Mark P. Mostert of Regent University

School of Education in Virginia Beach, Virginia reported in the second of

his high quality comprehensive reviews of peer-reviewed literature

investigating FC, that "Facilitated Communication (FC) had largely been

empirically discredited as an effective intervention for previously

uncommunicative persons with disabilities, especially those with autism and

related disorders. Key empirical findings consistently showed that the

facilitator and not the client initiated communication."

It is an emotive area because it raises serious questions in relation to

power-relations and abuse versus issues of self-determination

Mark, I guess you're closed to any

examples where FC is actually used by individuals as their primary and

preferred mode of communication then. Love the academic rigor and

unbiased approach you've taken.

I wish the rest of the world was as black and white.

Whatever the merits of the Stubblefield case, she has the

right to defend herself in court and has the right to be innocent until

proven

guilty. However, that fact that she

is basing her entire defense on the absolute incontrovertible lie of

Facilitated Communication is nothing short of astounding, and, IMO, will

not serve her well. Please spare me the slings

and arrows about how FC works and is in any way defensible

except as a bizarre fairytale. When used, it is without

question a form of abuse of the client and those who,

unfortunately, trust their abusers. Mark P. Mostert, PhD
