For my MA research I just use the free version of XMind and then save as a structured web page at the end, open in Word and save as Doc then much of the assignment is done.
I've used MindManager and MindJet pro in the past - commercial versions have the advantage of better integration into Office products but much depends on budget, the benefits of the additional features etc etc.
For collaborative online work I've used the MindMup plugin for Google Chrome (not wholly satisfactory) and Mindmeister (with more success).

Subject: Mind Mapping
Hi All,
A question l get asked alot is... What is the best mind mapping software or app available?
In my opinion it depends on what you want the mind mapping software to do. If you want something that will quickly turn your mind map into a PowerPoint presentation then Inspiration 9 is fantastic, it also depends on the operating system available.
I personally use Inspiration 9 on the MacBook, Mind Manager or Xmind on a Windows device and the Mindjet app on my iPad.
Does anyone have any other preferences? Or use something completely different?
Thanks,
Elaine
