Venue: The National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
Date/time: Wednesday, 7 October 2015 from 13:30 to 17:00
Free workshop will be of interest to historical researchers and archivists:
Most archival material relating to 19th century poverty was written either by the elites who legislated on the matter or the administrators who managed poverty at a national or local level. This half-day workshop will focus on the records created by the poor themselves and will introduce letters written by paupers complaining or asking for information about their rights to relief (record series MH 12). Practical exercises will explore how to locate pauper letters within volumes and their historical value. The workshops will be run by Dr Paul Carter and Katie Fox from The National Archives and Professor Steve King from the University of Leicester.
