Findmypast, in partnership with The National Archives, will be publishing the 1939 Register online on Monday 2 November 2015. The Register, taken on the night of 29 September 1939 provides an unprecedented insight into England and Wales on the verge of war. The information gathered by the British Government to help inform their decisions on identity cards, rationing and conscription is now, generations later, invaluable for family and local historians.
The 1939 register is particularly significant as it fills a 30 year gap between censuses, caused by the Second World War. You can find out more about the Register and how it was taken in Audrey Collin's blogs<http://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/?s=1939+register>. You can also listen to the message the Registrar General broadcast to the nation<http://media.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php/1939-national-registration-night/> on National Registration Night.
To date, Findmypast have been busy scanning and digitising<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdZE0NP-IVs> nearly 7,000 volumes that contain 40 million individual entries to the Register. The online service provided by Findmypast<www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register> will be a pay per view only service at launch.
