King’s Chevening Distinguished Lecture 2015
“The environment: What we know about social inequality and over-consumption and why both persist"
Speaker: Professor Danny Dorling
Date: Monday 23 November 2015
Time: 6:15pm
Venue: Edmond J Safra Theatre
This talk will consider the geographical evidence which suggests that social inequalities are high in some countries rather than others because of particular traditions and political outcomes. It will consider in particular why different countries in the affluent world have come to have developed very different transport systems, schooling systems and housing systems. There is currently great variation between countries in the rich world. And we could learn a lot from these geographical variations. When compared to more equal affluent countries, people in more unequal affluent countries appear, on average, to consume more things they do not necessarily need, produce more waste, eat more meat, waste more water, and use more gasoline. Could promoting greater economic equality be key to reducing environmental damage?
