BRITISH RECORDS ASSOCIATION: EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING 18 NOVEMBER 2015
In the light of two recent posts about the British Records Association, I can confirm that an Extraordinary General Meeting of members of the Association has been convened on 18 November at which members will be invited to reach a decision on a resolution that the Association should be wound up and its functions transferred to the Archives and Records Association. The text of the resolution and further details of the proposals underlying the resolution have already been circulated to members.
These detailed proposals were developed jointly by the two associations in a sustained process of discussion conducted for the Association by a working party having the approval and confidence of the Council of the British Records Association. The discussions were reported at our AGM in December 2014 and in a Newsletter issued in the spring of this year. At its meeting on 15 September a majority of Council judged the proposals of sufficient merit to be put to the Association's members for their verdict, though there was a dissenting minority view. Those who favour the proposals believe that they have real merit in offering a sustainable future for the activities valued by our members in a facilitating environment and in a manner well adapted to meeting the challenges currently facing both the Association and the wider archival sector. They think it is very doubtful indeed that the continuation of these activities in this way can be achieved by the Association remaining an independent body.
Council is confident that members will give careful and dispassionate consideration to the proposals it has been felt appropriate and timely to put before them.
