CHIANTI v.8 released

from Giulio Del Zanna [September 15, 2015]

Dear Colleague,

we would like to announce the release of Version 8.0 of the CHIANTI
database for astrophysical spectroscopy.
It includes several new entries and revises the atomic data for
many ions. In addition, the method for computing the
differential emission measure has been changed.
The details can be found in the paper, accepted for publication
in A&A and available on:

http://arxiv.org/abs/1508.07631

CHIANTI can be accessed as a stand-alone by downloading the tar files at
our web pages:

www.chiantidatabase.org

For users that mirror Solarsoft, the CHIANTI package will be automatically
updated.

For any comments and questions please sign up on our google group:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/chianti

(our previous email address, [log in to unmask]
is no longer active)

Note:
——-

a new version of ChiantiPy (http://chiantipy.sourceforge.net/),
compatible with V 8, will be released.

Important note:
———————–

for various reasons, it has been necessary to modify the format
of the elvlc and splups files.
The elvlc files have been restructured but retain the same name,
while the splups files have been significantly revised and are now renamed
as “scups” files. For both the updated elvlc and new scups files, an
ascii fixed text width format has been retained.
We have modified the CHIANTI software to read these new files, but all
the main software is left unchanged.

The new database and IDL programs are incompatible with the
previous CHIANTI versions and vice-versa.

best regards,
Giulio Del Zanna for the CHIANTI consortium

Living Reviews in Solar Physics resumes publication

September 16, 2015, from Frank Schulz

Living Reviews in Solar Physics had been recently acquired by Springer
and has now resumed publication with two new review articles on the
“Evolution of Active Regions” by Lidia van Driel-Gesztelyi and Lucie
Green; and on “The FIP and Inverse FIP Effects in Solar and Stellar
Coronae” by J. Martin Laming on September 11, 2015.

Science for Space Weather — 2016 ILWS Workshop, January 23 – 29, 2016 in Goa, India

September 15, 2015, from Robert F. Wimmer-Schweingruber

Understanding and being able to forecast space weather is an
increasingly important aspect of our modern technology-reliant society.
This workshop will treat all aspects of space weather, ranging from
solar origins of transient events (CMEs, Flares, CIRs) to their
propagation through the heliosphere and effects on Earth and planetary
bodies, from particle energization to forecasting particle environment
and its effects on technological and biological systems, as well as
solar-cycle effects and coupling of space weather to atmospheric
response. Metrics to assess predictions will also be discussed. The
workshop is structured along the lines of the COSPAR space weather
pathways and will include invited, contributed talks and posters, as
well as panel discussions and tutorials.

This workshop is being jointly organized by the International Living
with a Star (ILWS) Program, Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), the
SCOSTEP-VarSITI Program and hosted by the Center of Excellence in Space
Sciences India (CESSI). The workshop will be held in the seaside town of
Goa situated on the western coast of India.

PhD Positions in Solar System Science in Göttingen, Germany

September 15, 2015, from Sonja Schuh

The International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science
at the University of Göttingen in Germany (Solar System School) offers
a research-oriented doctoral programme covering the physical aspects of
Solar system science. It is jointly run by the Max Planck Institute
for Solar System Research (MPS) and the University of Göttingen.

Read more at http://www.solar-system-school.de/

Research at the MPS covers three main research areas: ”Sun and
Heliosphere”, ”Solar and Stellar Interiors” and ”Planets and Comets”.
The scientific topics in solar physics/heliophysics range from the
solar interior and subsurface dynamics investigated via global and local
helioseismology (Gizon, Duvall, Birch, Schou) to observable and measurable
phenomena in the atmosphere with its rich structure and dynamics in the
photosphere, chromosphere and corona, with the solar magnetic field as the
main driver for the multitude of dynamic solar features (Solanki, Lagg,
Gandorfer, Peter, Cameron, Woch, Büchner and others). The connection
between solar variability and climate is another focus (Krivova). MPS
researchers and engineers develop, construct and launch scientific
instruments, analyze and interpret the data and engage in intensive
theoretical work to develop an improved understanding of solar dynamo
processes, transport and acceleration mechanisms and more.

Solar System School students collaborate with leading scientists in
these fields and graduates are awarded a doctoral degree from the
renowned University of Göttingen or, if they choose, another university.

The Solar System School is open to students from all countries and
offers an international three-year PhD programme in an exceptional
research environment with state-of-the-art facilities on the Göttingen
Research Campus. Successful applicants are fully funded through an
employment contract and are eligible for relocation support.

The language of the structured graduate programme is English, with German
language courses offered (optional). The programme includes an inspiring
curriculum of scientific lectures and seminars as well as advanced training
workshops and provides travel funds to attend international conferences.

Applicants to the Solar System School should have a keen interest in
Solar system science and a record of academic excellence. They must
have, or must be about to obtain, an M.Sc. degree or equivalent in
physics or a related field, including a written Masters thesis (or a
scientific publication), and must document a good command of the
English language.

Please see the full call including the list of open PhD projects and
apply via the on-line application portal before 15 November 2015 at

https://www.mps.mpg.de/phd/applynow
