Dear John,
Are there any relevant information on the subject in he text of RK's speech in the Fountain Club? (p. 118 in "Rudyard Kipling's Uncollected Speeches: A Second Book of Words").
Yan S.
J> In an address at a luncheon at the Fountains Club at St Bartholomew's Hospital on 15 December 1927, Kipling began, as reported in the minutes of the club, by saying he felt
J>
J> 'honoured (in the words of Abernethy) to come have a liddle-by at the Fountain. '
J> 'Abernethy' was the distinguished surgeon, John Abernethy (1764-1831), the founder of the Medical School at St Bartholomew's. The Fountain stands in the forecourt of the hospital.
J> But we are baffled by the expression a liddle-by. Can anyone shed any light on this ?
J> Good wishes to all
J> John R
