Hi all
These mystery objects are almost certainly something to do with mining or the processing of mined material. Photos of the objects can be seen at

What are they and what was their function?
Hope someone can help.
Cheers

The person who dug them up provided the following info
Location: 9 Stanley Gardens, Oldland Common, Bristol. BS309PZ. Property overlooks Siston Brook Valley
Local Industries: Coal Mining. Zinc Smelting Works. Clay Quarrying. Hats and Pins / Buttons manufacturing. The property is on the site of an old market garden.
Possible uses of tiles: Construction of tunnels and/or Kilms. Appear to be heat resistant, water proof, and strong. Outer tiles appear to be paired with inner tiles. Mesh inserts inside.
Composition: Bitumin resin composite. Rectangular shape, with some having slight curvatures. Front and Sides are flat, with the back preformed pattern, with string mesh (asbestos?) inlays. Size: (L x H x W) 150mm x 25-50mm x 80mm
Notes My property stands on the land of 'Stanley House', which was constructed in 1902. The land behind the house was an old market garden. As well as the tiles, I have found pottery, metal tools (tongs), machinery parts, and 6" hand-made nails. Slag from casting is regularly found. It appears I am the only local resident to have these finds. The mining ceased at the turn of the century due to flooding, although quarrying for clay continued on until the 1950s.
