Job Description
Please note that this is a fixed-term position (starting 1st October 2015, or as soon as possible thereafter, and finishing 30th June 2016), and therefore the salary is pro-rata to the salary shown above.
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures seeks to appoint a full-time, nine-month fixed-term Teaching Fellow in German Language and Culture who will contribute to teaching core language modules in German Studies, mainly taken by advanced undergraduates studying for the BA in Modern Languages and Cultures and the BA in Combined Honours in Arts. The post is offered at grade 7 (the entry point for lecturers). In addition, the teaching fellow will engage in administrative duties involving at least some of the following activities: examinations and assessment, course documentation, module leadership and quality assurance, academic guidance, admissions and curriculum development.
Teaching
The School seeks to foster a culture of outstanding teaching and personal development in both the graduate and undergraduate communities, prescribing in accordance with University strategy that all undergraduate teaching be research-based, research-orientated, or research-led, and striving to reinforce and enhance the characteristically strong Durham bond between staff and students. German Studies manages a tightly-knit teaching and learning environment, and there are currently approximately 350 undergraduates studying one or more modules in German. German is studied mainly as part of the BA in Modern Languages, in conjunction with one or more languages taught in other parts of the School: Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian. German is also offered as half of the Joint Degree programme with History and as a component of the Combined Honours in Arts programme. Around 10% of students entering the first year are beginners in German and around 90% have an A-Level in the subject.
All students of German at Durham are required to take the relevant core language module in any given year (double for ab initio students in Y1 and Y2). They may choose other options from a range of modules in German literature, cinema, culture and translation. Students can take up to 60 (out of 120) credits from German modules in Y1, 80 (out of 120) credits in Y2, and the full 120 credits in the final year. The final year involves the completion of a compulsory undergraduate dissertation (20 or 40 credits), written in English. All students are required to spend their third year in one or more of the countries whose languages they are studying. The German Department has exchange programmes with universities of Heidelberg, Konstanz, Tόbingen, Freiburg i.Br., Kφln, Regensburg, Erlangen and Bern.
