Having a contingency is always a good idea. Don't place too much reliance on technology. Animations in powerpoint are notorious for not working as you expected, so use them sparingly or build your slides up to create the effect you want. If you plan to do a live demo, it is always a good idea to have screen shots to fall back on if the technology doesn't work. Don't take for granted that you will be able to access the Web, install software, or use a data stick.
From an organizer's point of view try to clarify with the venue what they can support and make this clear in the notes for speakers. Make sure that you and the venue have the same understanding. I remember asking a conference hotel whether they could support Powerpoint and was reassured that the room was amply provided with sockets.
