Archive Assistant (Agnew's cataloguing project)
Department: Research Centre
Salary: £19165 - £23254
Type: Fixed Term Full-Time
Closing date: 5 October 2015
Interview date: 16 October 2015
Job ref: 1312
The National Gallery is seeking to appoint an Archive Assistant to catalogue to item-level the correspondence of Agnew's between c.1822-1937.
The National Gallery acquired the archive of Thos. Agnew & Sons in February 2014. The long-running family firm of Agnew's has a history dating back to 1817 and during the later 19th century and early 20th century was one of two major London dealers in old master paintings. The firm's archive is a major research resource for the history of the art market, taste, provenance and business history. It is now housed within the National Gallery Research Centre, which supports the Gallery's research strategy and ensures that its research resources are made available to the widest possible audience, including both national and international visitors and digital users, as well as Gallery staff.
You will be educated to degree level and have a demonstrable interest in pursuing a career in archive administration. Working closely with the archive team, the primary purpose of the job is to catalogue a discrete collection of the Agnew's archive. You will therefore have some familiarity with archive cataloguing and palaeography and be able to work quickly, accurately and independently. Some knowledge of art history and business archives would be an advantage.
This position is supported by the Business Archives Council's Cataloguing Grant for Business Archives related to the Arts.
The person appointed into the role can decide whether they wish to work full-time or part-time. The post is fixed term for approximately 6 weeks full-time (or equivalent part-time).
