College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine
The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, part of the University of Edinburgh, a global top 20 University located in one of the world`s finest cities, is keen to attract early career researchers for appointment as Chancellor's Fellows. Applications are welcomed across all areas of medical informatics and population health sciences research and we especially encourage those in the following areas:
. Application of informatics, mathematics, data science and/or high performance computing to medical research including the interface with epidemiology, global health, medical statistics and clinical trials.
. Clinical informatics, mathematics, data science; building new foundations for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients through data-intensive methods and algorithms.
. Computational biomedicine, fundamental research in the space between clinical and biological sciences to address problems of data quantity and complexity that span multiple scales of biological organization.
. Social science and data science interface. For example the role of social science in shaping and analyzing developments in data science in relation to health, care and policy.
. Computational social science and social artificial intelligence, in which new styles of computation, statistics, quantitative social science and economics are used to develop new forms of large scale, population-based computation (social computing, collective intelligence, crowdsourcing, etc.) and to understand how humans interact with such systems.
These 5-year Fellowships are intended to support candidates at the start of their independent academic careers. Subject to satisfactory review at the end of year 4, Fellows will then move to a standard University academic open-ended contract. It is anticipated that most appointees will be successful in obtaining an open ended contract.
Edinburgh provides a unique opportunity to build in this field of research due to the close apposition of the Scottish Node of the Farr Institute (www.farrinstitute.org) (directed by Professor Andrew Morris, University of Edinburgh), the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics and the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre which underpin a new University-wide programme in data science (http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/data-science). Scotland is fortunate to have some of the best health service data in the world. Few other countries have systems that combine high quality data, consistency, and national coverage with the ability to link data to allow patient-based analysis and follow up. The University's College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine has established the new Usher Institute for Population Health Sciences and Informatics (directed by Professor Andrew Morris), that will work closely with the College's Institute for Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM, directed by Professor Wendy Bickmore, also Director of the MRC Human Genetics Unit within IGMM).
We are looking for highly talented academics who will contribute to our continued achievement of excellence in research and have the opportunity to flourish in a high energy research environment. You will already be working in an independent research capacity and will be developing your reputation for high quality research. Chancellor's Fellows also make an important contribution to enriching student learning experiences through postgraduate supervision and undergraduate teaching. You will concentrate on research initially, but will be trained in teaching skills and progressively take up this core academic activity.
Whilst we are proud of our rich heritage, we are a University that looks to the future, with a reputation for world leading interdisciplinary research, ideal for collaborative work. By joining our research-led community of international academics you will enjoy excellent career opportunities and an environment that nurtures talent and rewards success.
Appointment will be on the Grade 8 (£38,511-£45,954) or Grade 9 (£48,743 - £54,841) academic scale dependent on experience. Clinically qualified applicants interested in these disciplines are encouraged to contact Professor John Iredale, Dean of Clinical Medicine at [log in to unmask] in the first instance.
We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender or ethnic group. As women and members of ethnic minorities are currently under-represented in posts at this level we particularly encourage applications from members of these groups. As a global University, we are interested in attracting candidates working in all parts of the world and can offer relocation support.
