Duties and Responsibilities:
The Cancer Research UK & UCL Cancer Trials Centre (CTC) is mainly funded by a mixture of Cancer Research UK programme and project grants, with additional funding from the other charities and pharmaceutical companies. It is responsible for the development and conduct of clinical trials to evaluate new approaches to the treatment of cancer, and investigating new methods of screening for cancer. It is now one of the largest cancer trials centre in the UK, responsible for over 90 clinical studies. They are predominantly multicentre trials (UK and international), of anti-cancer drugs, surgery and radiotherapy, aimed at improving the survival and other health outcomes. CTC staff collaborate with clinicians and research staff in hospitals and universities in the UK and abroad, and are in regular communication with the regulatory and ethics authorities.
There are currently six statisticians in the CTC, at different levels of experience. The trial statistician is an essential member of the Trial Management Team, contributing to the definition of the research question, the design of the trial, the submission of grant proposals to funding bodies and the writing of papers for publication. He/she undertakes all the statistical analyses and has responsibility for the confidential reports to the Data Monitoring and Ethics Committee. All the CTC statisticians are encouraged to attend further training courses of interest, including national or international conferences, as part of their own professional education.
The main purpose of this post is to support on-going local and national clinical trials, and help develop new ones, by working with the statisticians, clinical investigators and other trial centre staff. This will include involvement in the design, liaison with trial staff during trial recruitment and statistical analyses of the trials and the writing of reports and papers for publication. The appointed person will be responsible for statistical aspects of trials co-ordinated by the Cancer Trials Centre.
Salary (inclusive of London allowance): £33,353 - £ 40,313 per annum (Grade 7).
This post is funded for one year in the first instance.
Key Requirements:
The postholder will have a post-graduate (MSc or above) in medical statistics, clinical trials, epidemiology, or other related subject, along with significant experience in analysing research studies. He/she will also have knowledge of statistical methods of design and analyses and of one or more statistical analyses packages, e.g. STATA, SAS.
