Dear Colleagues,
Please bring this announcement to the attention of suitable candidates:
An exciting opportunity is available to join a Leverhulme Trust-funded project based on understanding the mechanisms of photostability of biological building blocks using both quantum simulations and ultrafast pump-probe experiments. The project is a joint collaboration between Professor Dmitry Shalashilin (Theory-University of Leeds) and Dr Vasilios Stavros (Experiment-University of Warwick). The presently advertised research fellowship pertains to the experiments to be carried out at the University of Warwick and the post is for 30 months.
The applicant will be involved in the application of a variety of experimental techniques to advance, in a systematic manner, our understanding of UV absorption and energy dissipation in the chromophores of biological building blocks, namely pyrrole-based systems. In particular, the applicant will extend the current capabilities in the ultrafast laboratory at Warwick based on gas-phase time-resolved ion-yield and time-resolved velocity map imaging spectroscopies to the solution-phase using transient electronic absorption spectroscopy and transient vibrational absorption spectroscopy. The applicant will use these latter two solution-phase approaches to assess the scalability of gas-phase spectroscopic measurements to the more biologically relevant solution-phase scenario.
Our goal in these experiments is to probe the ultrafast energy transfer processes in pyrrole-based systems, in particular those involving non-adiabatic and tunnelling mediated dynamics. These measurements will complement the quantum wavepacket dynamics simulations that will be performed in parallel with our theoretical collaborator, Professor Dmitry Shalashilin at the University of Leeds.

Kind Regards,
Vas Stavros
