The Department for Communication Science and Media Research (IfKW) at
Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, invites applications for the
following position:
DOCTORAL or POST DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
IN THE AREA OF COMPUTATIONAL JOURNALISM (F/M)
100% (post doctorial) or 67% (doctoral) position, TV-L 13*, for 3
years, starting as soon as possible.
*Typical salary range: €41,256 - €59,544
The position focuses how computational processes are increasingly
replacing journalists’ editorial and reporting functions and the
impact this is having on individual news consumers, the journalism
profession, and society at large.
The post-holder will collect evidence about how algorithmic processes
increasingly: determine which news stories get covered (through news
detection); actually write news content (through news creation);
format the news the public gets to see (through news packaging); and
filter and prioritize news for individuals (via news distribution and
discovery).
Suitable applicants should:
- hold a university degree (MA, PhD or equivalent) in Communications,
or another social sciences field if they can demonstrate experience in
the area of computational journalism;
- have experience of empirical research in a social science context,
for example in: content analysis, surveys, interviewing, document
analysis, field observation, web analytics, and quantitative and
qualitative user studies;
- have excellent command of English (written and oral), and at least
basic German communication skills.
The candidate is expected to:
- contribute actively to the research in the outlined area;
- contribute to the development of the research design and relevant
research tools;
- participate in publication activities and presentations at
international conferences.
The department will provide the candidate with:
- an international and high-quality research environment in the centre
of Munich within a long term (up to eight years) funded research
project;
- collaboration and supervision by Professor Neil Thurman;
- a generous budget for research-related travel (conferences,
fieldwork, etc.) and other research-related expenses; and
- opportunities to teach (in English is possible).
