Hi,
from Mark O'Leary
Folks,
Some of you may already have noticed, but Jisc is pleased to announce that
version 2 of the `eduroam companion' app is now available for download
through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/eduroam-companion/id480611749
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ja.android.eduroamcompanion
This release updates the appearance of the app to conform to modern OS
standards and work at native resolutions across a range of handsets and
tablets. Individual coverage locations are aggregated appropriately to map
scale, so regional overviews are possible. We have also added a simulated
`heatmap' style view (largely for fun - it doesn't reflect actual signal
strengths, just densities of APs). The user can choose to view only the
`official' AP location data, user submitted locations, or the combination
of both - the latter two options will become more useful as more users
`tag' locations where they find coverage. Behind the scenes, the app is
much more manageable, and the Android and iOS versions share a common
backend database.
Applications like this depend on the quality of the location data
submitted by the community;
Mark then asks site admins to mark each AP or each building - which is asking
for more than currently recommended/eequested (marking each contiguous area of eduroam coverage
at your site). We are aware of the effort/burden of marking locations down which
you are likely to have already marked down in your own internal wireless management
system. Work has been done in the past by some sites to talk to their wifi mgmt API to
pull that data out and submit it (mixed results). I have also asked eduroam operations
team (again) to look at polygonal coverage areas instead of a single point.
Please can we ask that your organisation, if providing an eduroam visited service
(eduroam wireless present and/or eduroam wired sockets) at LEAST have a properly defined
location - no active organsiation should have a 'default location' still present in
their eduroam UK support server configuration.
Please visit the eduroam UK support server (https://support.eduroam.uk) if you are the
eduroam admin at your site and verify your current location information.
many thanks
alan
