Job Purpose
Archives Sector Development (ASD) is the main focus for The National Archives' leadership of the archives sector. We operate in four teams (Programmes, Engagement, Private Archives, Collections Knowledge) working closely and flexibly together and with other specialists around The National Archives. Team members have focused roles but are expected to build an understanding of the work of the whole department so that archive professionals and strategic stakeholders see coherence in our leadership. We aspire to be connected, informed, innovative, challenging and supportive and to deliver excellent and cost-effective services and programmes that benefit services and their customers, and improve the archival health of the nation.
This is an exciting time for The National Archives as it fully develops its role as lead of the archives sector. Our vision for archives is set out in the government policy, Archives for the 21st Century with a focus on developing a sustainable and resilient archives sector.
The post provides an exciting opportunity to develop our regional leadership of the archives sector. The role will involve working in complex situations, using analysis and creative approaches to support sector development. Key activities will be relationship building with the sector and stakeholders, fostering networks and developing strategic initiatives to support sector development.
The role will call for autonomy, whilst working within a team that has a strong culture of mutual support and skills sharing.

Role and Responsibilities
* To support archive sector development by work with a portfolio of archive services
* To build strong working relationships with stakeholders, senior managers and archive staff in order to understand need, identify opportunities and advocate for the effectiveness of the sector
* Enhance the skills and understanding of the sector by fostering sustainable training and skills sharing networks
* To identify and promote innovative new models of service delivery by spotlighting existing good practice and developing pilots
* To confidently represent the sector to external partners and build new relations with additional stakeholders at a regional level, and ensuring this approach is aligned with the national stakeholder strategy led by the Strategic Engagement Manager
* Support the roll-out of the Accreditation Scheme for archives, as the UK standard for archives services and as a key self-improvement tool for the sector. Use the Accreditation Scheme to advocate for investment in archive services and prove their value and effectiveness
* Help formulate or identify policy and guidance to support key areas of sector development, and to be a conduit of advice and good practice from within The National Archives and across the wider archives sector
* Work collaboratively with other members of the Engagement Team, and colleagues across The National Archives to ensure sharing of good practice and innovation across regions and to build a culture of skills sharing and knowledge transfer between team members
* Work closely with the Places of Deposit Manager in the Engagement Team to ensure the regulation of Places of Deposit within a wider development context
Person Specification
Essential:
* Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills, including the ability to influence effectively at a senior level
* Proven written and verbal communications, including the ability to produce high calibre speeches, reports and presentations
* Track record of managing a demanding workload and prioritising effectively to achieve maximum impact
* Experience of strategy development, implementation and evaluation
* Demonstrable understanding of the impact of political decision-making
* Ability to work independently, whilst having a strong team work ethic of skills and ideas sharing. Sound judgement in choosing when to operate on own authority and when to refer matters to head of department, director and chief executive
* Good research and interpretation skills, able to adapt and present findings in an appropriate way, mindful of the impact on the intended audience
* Understanding of the archive sector and its context
* Specialist knowledge of one or more key development areas for the archives sector (technical, e.g. archive building design; and/ or contextual, e.g. strategic planning, audience development) and willingness to gain a baseline knowledge about the professional standards and regulatory and policy framework for archives
* Ability to travel within the UK - on average three days a week outside the office, with associated overnight stays
Desirable:
Experience of working with archives, or in a related area of the heritage or culture sector

Starting Salary
£35,000
