Thanks Judy and Vashti - I suspect the trial will be the way to go here but it is great to hear how people do this!

Subject: RE: Cataloguing collection estimates
One of my first library roles was working on the retrospective cataloguing project at King's College Library in Cambridge back in the '90s. At the time the theory was to catalogue 10 books an hour. In practice it depended on the book - obviously you could copy over catalogue records from places like Library of Congress and amend a few details with a lot of books, but rarer items, or books with no catalogue records, or spanning a range of subject areas and needing added subject fields would take a little longer.
This was a long time, so am not sure what expectations and practice are nowadays.

Subject: [LIS-WALES] Cataloguing collection estimates
Hi all,
I have had a heads up that I might be asked how long it would take a qualified cataloguing librarian (at grade 6 or 7) to catalogue a collection of 20,000 books at our usual standards (AACR2/RDA, in marc etc).
It is largely straightforward collection but with some perhaps obscure foreign language items and some rare books (the latter I think will largely have records available).
I've never done this and wondered if there are any established practices or, if not, good practices that some fellow Welsh cataloguers may have followed?
Any suggestions very welcome!
Best wishes
Amy
