The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is one of the world's leading centres for research in social anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change; it is primarily in this domain that its researchers contribute to anthropological theory, though many programmes also have applied significance and political topicality.

The Department 'Integration and Conflict' of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is offering

1 Postdoctoral and 1 Ph.D. position for a pluridisciplinary research project on Convivencia
starting on 1st January 2016.

CONVIVENCIA is a joint research and fellowship program of four Max Planck Institutes: the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz - Max Planck Institute (Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wolf), the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History, Frankfurt/Main (Prof. Dr. Thomas Duve), the Max Planck Institute for History of Science, Berlin (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Renn) and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle/Saale (Prof. Dr. Günther Schlee).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The regional focus is not limited to the Mediterranean area as the name of the frame project might suggest. The role of the Halle component of this project is to explore the theme of organisation of ethnic and religious difference in wider regional and historical contexts for theory building based on comparative perspectives.

Project proposals dealing with empires or (parts of) former empires are invited. The focus should be on modes of organising difference from jural, administrative and/or everyday life perspectives. Regionally, the department has its strength in Central Asia, Africa and the Muslim World. This focus is not exclusive, but projects on these regions would fit particularly well into comparative frameworks established at the institute. The project should link diachronic perspectives with present ways of life and modes of organisation.

Your Profile
Good field research skills, the ability to work in a team, and a good command of written and spoken English are required. Postdoctoral applicants should either be in possession of a Ph.D. in anthropology, sociology or a related discipline or submit evidence indicating that such a dissertation will be finished and submitted before the designated starting date. Applications for a Ph.D. position should be in an equivalent situation concerning the completion of a Masters.
German language expertise is not required but learning German is encouraged, especially if relevant literature is available in German.

Our Offer
The positions are awarded for three years. The workplace is Halle/Saale (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany). We expect our PhD students to complete a one year period of fieldwork as part of their studies.
