Introducing LIBRARIA—A Cooperative of Open Access Journals
Last October, at the Wenner-Gren conference on “Open Access and Beyond” held at Medialab-Prado ( <>https://openaccessmadrid2014.wordpress.com <https://openaccessmadrid2014.wordpress.com/>), Alberto Corsin Jimenez (CSIC, Spain), John Willinsky (Public Knowledge Project) and I met and discussed how to bring together a group of scholarly societies, journals and open access advocates to reimagine the future of scholarly publishing in cooperative and financially sustainable terms.
Today, we officially launch LIBRARIA, a new collective of social sciences journals and institutions including HAU, Cultural Anthropology, The European Association of Social Anthropologists, The Wenner-Gren Foundation, Public Knowledge Project, Society for Social Studies of Science, SPARC, Limn, Valuation Studies & Anthropological Forum. To this effect, we are working towards testing a variety of models that will enable flipping our members’ subscription journals to open access publications, whilst simultaneously offering long-term economic sustainability to those journals that are already OA.
LIBRARIA is delighted to be part of the Public Knowledge Project’s Open Access Publishing Cooperative project, which has received a $460,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation ( <>http://oa-cooperative.org/ <http://oa-cooperative.org/>).
