Hi Emma,
Thank you for offering this, it's great to know that we just need to go next door to see the scanner in action.
I emailed you directly.
Thanks again,
Anna

Hi Anna
We have an Epson Expression 10,000 XL with trannie hood. We scan all our x-rays using Silverfast (Ai, didn’t bother with the x-ray version) at 100% and 300dpi and Conservation stitch and balance them in NIPS/VIPS software, which is more accurate than Photoshop’s merge function.
You’re more than welcome to come over the road and try it out for comparison.
The only annoyance is it is slightly smaller than our plates, so if the overlap is too small we occasionally have to scan a strip and Cons have to stitch these first.
Emma

Hi Ori,
Thank you for replying, hope all is well.
I agree the Epson scanner won't probably deliver the dynamic range and overall quality we need.
Epson doesn't even provide any Density info for the transparencies lid.
It would just be interesing to try it because, as far as I know, is the only A3+ scanner for transparencies that runs with updated drivers compatible with new Macs or PCs.
I've checked the Metis DRS. 750 and it's impressive, but it seems like it scans only reflective media. Do you know if it can be used for film too? maybe with additional accessories?
Best,
Anna

Hi Anna,
It should be fairly easy to test an expression scanner, any Epson rep. Should provide you with a device fir testing.
Though, You can't compare the Creo's dynamic range to the Epson's one.
Going with photography, Kaiser offer a version of their repro stand with very strong light table ( we have it in our studio).
You should also check Metis DRS. 750. I believe it will be the optimal solution.
Do tell us what you find out,

Thank you Malcom for suggesting this.
We should get a demo soon with an 80Mp back that as you said would be fine for 600ppi, so it would partially cover our requirements.
Did you ever get a chance to see x-ray scans produced with this process?

Anna,
Have you considered photographing the plates rather than scanning? An 80Mp back will meet your 600ppi spec. and would be a lot quicker than scanning. You could get to 1200ppi by stitching multiple shots. Just a thought‽

Hi All,
I'm researching scanners for our 30x40cm x-ray plates.
Until now we have been using highly specialized scanners, specifically the Fuji Lanovia 550 and the Kodak Creo EVERSMART SUPREME II.
However, they are not longer compatible with current OS versions and their maintenance is becoming increasingly challenging.
We are aiming to scan regularly at 600ppi and less often at 1200ppi.
Does anybody know about any more recent scanner that would perform well in terms of reliability, image quality and speed?
At the moment we only found the Epson Expression 11000 XL PRO ( http://www.filmscanner.info/en/EpsonExpression11000XL.html ) that has good reviews but it's not a dedicated system for transparencies and the datasheet provides very limited info.
Does anybody have any experience with it? or can suggest an x-ray scanning service, possibly in London, that uses that scanner to do some tests?
Many thanks,
Anna
