During the First World War St John Ambulance set up and ran a hospital in Étaples, France. It was funded and staffed by the Order of St John and was well known for its excellent medical facilities and high standard of care.
Reports were sent back to the Order in London on a weekly basis and provide a fascinating insight into everyday life in a First World War hospital. They detail everything from staff and casualty numbers to entertainments, important visitors and even the weather.
To commemorate the remarkable work of St John men and women, the Museum of the Order of St John has digitised these reports and will be regularly publishing each one on the 100th anniversary of its original date.
The first report is now available at: https://stjohnsgate.wordpress.com/category/reports-071915/ Please check back regularly for more.
These reports have been catalogued and digitized as part of a project to catalogue the First World War papers held in the archive of the Order of St John. This project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and incorporated a youth project to interpret a scrapbook of cartoons and photographs made by Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse Veronica Nisbet.
