Research Assistant/Research Associate in Genetic Epidemiology
Two Posts
MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit at the University of Bristol
We are seeking to appoint two talented individuals to undertake applied epidemiological investigations into the aetiology of complex human traits at the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU) at the University of Bristol. The IEU consists of six research programmes encompassing causal modelling, genetic, and epigenetic epidemiology. Professor George Davey Smith is director of the IEU and runs programme 1, on Mendelian randomization. The appointed person will largely contribute to this programme, but will work collaboratively with many researchers across the Unit, and with external collaborators. The major focus of the post will be the performance of Mendelian randomization analyses, in particular the newly developed two-sample Mendelian randomization approach utilizing large-scale available datasets as well as in-house data, such as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, www.bris.ac.uk/alspac) cohort, and from new initiatives such as the UK Biobank, UK10K (www.uk10k.org). There may be opportunity to spend a secondment with the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation in Cambridge, with its director Dr Jeffrey Barrett.
The roles provide excellent opportunities to develop and pursue a research career as part of the MRC Integrated Epidemiology Unit at the University of Bristol, benefiting from placement within the School of Social and Community Medicine.
The appointment will be full-time on Grade I or J, depending on the extent of previous relevant research experience, and is offered until 31 March 2018. There may be opportunities for outstanding candidates to continue working in the Department beyond this time. The post is ideally suited to someone with a PhD in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics or a closely related discipline.
The closing date for applications is 2 September and interviews will be held on 18 September.
