Hi Luke,

Thanks for joining and participating.

The idea of 'teaching' vs. 'Demonstrating' has been a hot topic in this forum and in the events and conferences I have been to while talking with others. I think that line is increasingly blurred and personally go with the idea that 90% of the time technicians are teaching (ether well or not so well) but the idea of simple demonstrating seems in most cases such a pointless exercise in terms of student learning that we have to teach.

I would then and in fact do argue that some technical staff are involved in teaching (in different levels) and where students say they have learnt more can be true but it relates to a particular type of learning. One that supports, sits alongside and/or augments learning in other areas. By looking at it from this direction the grey then sits in the 'value' of this learning and of course if done right it is of great value but if done wrong is counter productive. Here is where I'd like to see the balance set.

I am sure other will have lot of opinions on this too. I for one though feel technical staff should approach sessions as teaching in order to make them affective.

Kind Regards,

Nathan

Hi All,

I'm new to this list, happy to discuss the kind of thing we do here in my
dept. at Salford. We support our students a great deal - in fact they
nominated us for a student award because of it this year. We regularly
get cards saying how they 'couldn't have got through the course without
us' and 'we have learned more from you than any of our tutors'. Now I
doubt this latter aspect quite a bit, but I guess the big topic of debate
in our team is where the line is drawn between 'demonstration' and
'teaching'. It seems a very grey area.

Hope you're all having a good summer so far!

Thanks,
Luke
