A discussion amongst school librarians and teacher librarian is taking place
in Australia concerning research carried out by John Hattie, Professor and
Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of
Melbourne. Hattie has provided the following statistics in his book:
Visible Learning for Teachers, 2012, pp251-254 (ISBN 978-0-415-69015-7)
about the effect which a Teacher Librarian has on various learning skills:
Study Skills - an effect statistic of 0.63, Repeated reading programs 0.67,
Writing programs 0.44, Principals/school leaders 0.39, Enquiry based
teaching 0.31. (Hattie feels that if a statistic is lower than 0.4 it is of
little worth)
