Ken is an internationally recognised game and experience designer who creates “immersive stories that seek to write themselves.” By encouraging large numbers of people to respond to media-enabled prompts, he develops a real life story experience for those involved. These collaborative storytelling games encourage people to think deeply about socially relevant issues as they play with them.
His latest work is FutureCoast which asks, "What if we could hear the voicemail messages that people leave for each other in the future? What might they tell us about the possibly climate-changed futures we will live in?" FutureCoast is the world's first massively collaborative work of "cli-fi" (climate fiction), an emerging genre of literature and film. University of Brighton researchers Dr Sarah Atkinson and Dr Julie Doyle were involved in the project in 2014 and will be working on it further together with ONCA Centre for Arts and Ecology.
Ken will discuss other successful alternate-reality games such as World Without Oil and Giskin Anomaly, and how fiction can frame invitations to play that generate participation and engagement with complex social and environmental issues.
His "authentic fictions" spring from deep beliefs about the transformative effect of participation and play, and a quest to establish collaborative storymaking and interactive theatre as a recognised method to help people engage in true inquiry and learning. Come to this talk ready to play!
Matt Locke, digital storyteller & founder of Storythings (www.storythings.com) will chair a q&a with Ken after this talk. Matt Locke founded Storythings in 2011 as a creative studio helping clients tell stories in an age of digital attention. Recent clients include Google Creative Labs NY, Channel 4, Pulse Films, Penguin, Faber & Faber, BBC, Welcome Trust, WWF, Dazed & Confused, Random House & ITV.
