Hi Jackie,

we have a system where our flu champions (ward based vaccinators) are provided with a training package of relevant information in the format of a power point presentation, draft PGD and current research.

They all have to be up to date with their basic life support training.

They have to complete an assessment in the form of a questionnaire, which they have to pass with 100% (governance)

they are then signed as competent to give the vaccine by the Director of Nursing for the Trust

They come to OH to sign and collect their PGD, vaccine etc once the above process has been completed.

I designed this format following the swine flu in 2009, as it was just not operationally feasible for them to leave the wards for training, and there are not enough OH staff available to go to each ward to train.

This format was designed in house, with the input of pharmacy, infection prevention & control, resus team, director of =nursing and clinical lead for virology

Kind regards,

Tracy

Hi

Just wondered what other NHS Trusts Do in regard to training nurses (ward based) to administer the Flu Vaccine to other members of staff.

If you are going to train up nurses on the wards to administer the Flu vaccine are you able to do so without them having to attend the two days training that you usually have to do to administer all vaccines.

So for instance, if we gave half a days training, which involves someone from Resus talking about anaphylaxis, someone from infection control talking all about the flu what is is, transmission etc. Then we as OH go through the consent form, confidentiality, how to vaccinate them, etc, and then they do a test to ensure they have understood it all . Would this still be ok or do they have to have the full 2 days, even though they would never vaccinate for anything else other than the flu.

If they can vaccinate without the 2 days, can anybody advise of where this is written.

Thanks
