From a Buddhist philosophy’s point of view which has respects for own body asking for CS without medical indication is an act of self-harm. This mentality could be seen in Japanese culture too. Traditionally Japanese people see the body as ‘the gift from the parents’ and try to avoid getting any manipulation on the body. Of course it has been westernized and changed recently but still a part of our culture for some Japanese. For instance Young Japanese have more relaxed attitudes towards piercing ears but older generation wouldn’t like the recent trends in society which accepts it. They think that it is disrespectful towards their body. In general physiological changes are things Japanese people would accept more easily and they tend to avoid making an incision intentionally.
Having said that I have fear of this culture changing in childbirth rapidly seeing Japanese women feeling more fearful of normal physiological childbirth which makes them accept elective CS easily. In fact it may not be a surprise as Japanese obstetricians often scars women with risks of natural childbirth without telling them risks of CS.
Anyway this is my opinion and please let me know if anyone has different views on the matter.
