Managing Migration Flows in the Mediterranean? A Critical Appraisal
[2 CPD hours]
Thursday 25 June 2015, 17:30-19:30
British Institute of International and Comparative Law
Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5JP
Recent weeks have seen a number of incidents in the Mediterranean Sea that have led to the death of over 1,000 people within the space of just a few days. This was not the first incident of its kind, but its size and media attention shed a spotlight on the ongoing migration crisis in the Mediterranean. It has prompted the European Union and its Member States to develop a series of measures and proposals aimed at addressing the situation. The EU Border Agency's funding was increased as was its operational remit. Member States committed vessels, equipment and personnel to help. The EU has also proposed a series of controversial measures, including the bombing of 'smugglers' vessels in Libya to curtail the sea crossings. Meanwhile, private shipping companies continue to play their role in search and rescue, as they are required to do by the industry's traditions and international law. This seminar will seek to unpack and discuss some of these issues and developments by addressing its multiple facets from various expertise.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception and networking.
