Call for Papers: (Special Issue: "Xenophobia, Migration and Development")
Vol. 1(3): November, 2015
AHMR is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed on-line journal created to encourage and facilitate the study of all aspects (socio-economic, political, legislative and developmental) of Human Mobility in Africa. Through the publication of original research, policy discussions and evidence research papers, AHMR provides a comprehensive forum devoted exclusively to the analysis of contemporaneous trends, migration patterns and some of the most important migration-related issues.
African migration remains an intercontinental phenomenon despite the widespread assumption that migration flows are mainly directed to Europe. Numerous African states have reacted to the perception of a rise in number of international migrants, in particular undocumented, by increasing border control and tightening up immigration laws. Moreover, the resurgence of nationalism and the construction of state's national identity based on citizenship has increased xenophobia and resentment against immigrants from other African countries. Discrimination, abuses and violations of rights targeting African migrants pose a serious challenge to policy makers and risk to undermine the impact of migration on development.
Considering the critical issue of xenophobia and its links with international migration and development, in November/December, 2015, we are holding Special Issue on "Xenophobia, Migration and Development". We believe that AHMR continue to contribute for a serious scholarly, academic and policy engagement by all those concerned. In this regard, Prof Shimelis Gulema, Stony Brook University, New York (USA), is our Guest Editor on this Special Issue ([log in to unmask])
Prof Gulema is an African Scholar based at Stony Brook University (SUNY), New York, USA, where he teaches Modern African History, Politics, and Development. He was a senior academic staff member in the History Department, at Addis Ababa University (1991-2003) before he joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he completed his doctoral studies. Prof. Gulema served in different fora working in Africa (including the African Studies Association and H-Horn, part of H-Net Africa, etc. His research interests and engagements revolve around the study of ideologies, practices, and identities at national and transnational levels and in both colonial and post-colonial contexts (including issues of urbanization, migration, globalization, transnationalism, and modern state-nation formations). Prof. Gulema's edited books, published papers in books and academic journals, and produced a range of academic working papers, research reports and other publications. His recent research works have been published, among others, in the Journal of North East African Studies, Journal of the British Institute and Journal of Ethiopian Studies. He has a forthcoming book chapter entitled "The Political Economy of Urban Modernization: Addis Ababa, 1941-1975," in Awet Welde Michael and Anthony Lee, Eds. New Perspectives in African History, (2015).
