This latest novel by Dominican-American author Alan Cambeira is crafted masterfully in the widely acclaimed tradition of Caribbean literature. SEQUÍA has everything! Like a typical Dominican sancocho ['stew'], this tale has all the savory ingredients to make it a gourmet delight. Cambeira captures all the succulent flavors: the intimate honesty, the magical tapestry of the tropics, the burdensome, often painful past, the pride and the passion of the usually deceptive modern Caribbean. Obviously as an experienced college professor, Cambeira has done his homework thoroughly. He has woven a tightly knit and suspenseful tale about the truly frightening results of global warming and climate change slowly devastating a small Caribbean island.
This is the same island that serves as the colorful backdrop of all the other intriguing stories in Cambeira's 'The Azúcar Trilogy.' -- an ongoing saga of the socio-economic and political development, as well as the personal drama of the island's residents who are a trying to find ways of escaping the historic cycle of abuse and exploitation appearing in whatever form. Like before, the author seduces the reader to plunge deeply into the ancient and mystical spirit world so closely associated with Caribbean belief systems.
'SEQUÍA!' is a captivating tale of obedience and denial, the dilemma of either honoring or abandoning sacred island traditions, and finally, a story that witnesses unimagined natural destruction. The two central characters are Alegra Saint Jacques and Nelson Campos de la Rosa, the present-day offspring of two key figures from the past, who respectively played important roles in the island's turbulent transformation from brutal sugar cultivation, then the rapid onslaught of the tourist industry, followed by the lucrative expansion of globalization in the form of export assembly plants [modern sweatshops].
Alegra and Nelson are studying climate science at a university in the United States. They find themselves traveling back to the island of their birth as participants among a world renowned team of investigators who are conducting important research on the visible manifestations of climate change and global warming in the Caribbean region. Alegra and Nelson stumble upon personally jolting facts about their shared past while recording the destructive effects of the horrific drought currently overtaking life across the entire island.Cambeira thoughtfully includes what he calls a helpful reader's guide that explains often complicated Caribbean cultural terms and expressions -- Spanish and Haitian Kreyòl -- that are sprinkled generously throughout the text to give authenticity and local color. This is beautiful storytelling in the classic Caribbean mold of Maryse Condé, Julia Alvarez, Jacques Romaine, Junot Díaz, and Edwidge Danticat. This is a thrilling read!
