Hello everyone,
Sheffield's Showroom Cinema is hosting a weekend of free film screenings and discussions on the forgotten stories of Korean Comfort women during World War Two on June 19 and 20, as part of the 2015 Transnational Cinema Study Day, and in collaboration with the Northeast Asian History Foundation, Rikkyo University, Korea.net and Sheffield Hallam University.
The event begins with an introduction and the screening of Byun Young-joo's The Murmuring (1997) on Friday 19th June at 6.30pm, followed by a drinks reception, and it continues on Saturday 20 June with a full day of screenings and discussions including Kim Dong-won’s 63 Years On which contains in-depth interviews with former comfort women from Korea, China and the Philippines, and Hae-ryong Ahn’s My Heart is Not Broken Yet, which focusses on one woman’s fight for an official apology from the Japanese government. After each film, the audience will be invited to join a discussion on issues raised in the film, led by filmmakers and leading academics from Rikkyo University, Japan and the Northeast Asian History Foundation.
The weekend promises to be an important and pertinent study of human suffering during wartime, but also a reminder of the strength and resilience of these women and their strong bonds with one another.
Attendance to the event is free, although booking is recommended. Bookings can be made online, in person at the Showroom Box Office or on 0114 275 7727 on Korean 'Comfort' Women on Friday 19 June and Saturday, 20 June.
