Hi Helen
I asked one of our OTs who is in the wheelchair service here but not on the circulation list. She emailed this response:
"It's a good question. Sadly, I don't know of any research per se, mostly we do it on a subjective basis. We certainly do put ventilation holes in MSI/Derby (Blatchford Seating equivalent) seats as well as foam seats. The use of spacer fabric covers also seems to help a bit. Alternatively we use Matrix seating, which inherently has holes in the material, which you probably already know!
I would suggest maybe Helen contact Blatchford seating, SOS, Matrix, Contour 886 and Otto Bock directly to see if they know of any articles. Some of them have staff who are involved in research projects so could possibly be more helpful."
Hope this helps.

I have a query about the use of ventilation holes in custom seating.
I've had a couple of requests recently for putting in ventilation holes into seat shells to provide ventilation to reduce clients sweating whilst sitting in their chairs all day.
I can understand the theory but does anyone know whether there is any research out there that confirms (or denys) that putting in these holes actually works? Interested to hear from anyone that has used them in foam carve/MSI.
Thanks
