Dear all, 

The National Archives is currently recruiting for a Research, Grants and Academic Liaison Adviser for maternity cover. Please see below for more information and how to apply via the link. 
 
As part of a lively team, your role as Research, Grants and Academic Liaison Adviser will be an exciting opportunity to help drive forward the Research function as the co-ordinating centre of research funding and academic liaison within The National Archives. You will support the Research team and The National Archives staff across the organisation in advising on and helping to develop strong grant applications in order to win funding to enable research at The National Archives. You will also promote the reputation and credibility of The National Archives with the internal and external research community, contributing particularly to the development of communications and strategic relationships between The National Archives and the wider academic community.

Context
Research is highly important to The National Archives, enabling innovation and progress, and raising our reputation. The Research team within the Research and Collections Directorate underpins organisational business priorities and objectives through leadership in research and grants co-ordination, and the application of research findings to business-critical research questions for the benefit of The National Archives, the wider archives sector, academic and public communities. In addition, the team is responsible for leading on high-level strategic liaison with our academic stakeholders.

Role and Responsibilities

* Support the research and academic liaison functions within The National Archives, positioning The National Archives as a respected player with a strong reputation and credibility with the internal and external research community.
* Lead on grants and funding advice to staff across The National Archives, taking responsibility for the pre award aspects of The National Archives' grants applications, to enable The National Archives to exploit funding opportunities and initiatives where research would benefit The National Archives' strategic and business objectives.
* Lead as grants administrator, supporting staff through the internal grants approval process, and co-ordinating and submitting grants to funding bodies.
*  Lead at a tactical level on academic stakeholder relations, representing The National Archives and its research function to external stakeholder bodies where appropriate.
* Lead on wider research, grants and academic communications, disseminating and promoting information and research findings to both internal and external research communities through a range of effective messages, mechanisms and engagement.
* Lead on the promotion of The National Archives' research and academic liaison work, for example, through the co-ordination and organisation of successful academic events.

This role will focus on research and grants funding.

Person Specification

Essential:
* Demonstrable experience in research or research / grants management.
* Proven track-record of grants writing or equivalent writing skills.
* Knowledge and experience of the external research and academic community, its practices and culture.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the presence and confidence to represent The National Archives at a senior level.
* An ability to work unsupervised and independently in a non-routine role, but able to judge accurately when to consult.
* Excellent stakeholder engagement and networking skills, able to interact and build relationships and networks with a range of audiences up to a senior level, both internally and externally.
* Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills, with the confidence and ability to manage challenge with firmness, sensitivity and diplomacy.
Desirable:
* Research degree in the area of information, history or social science.
* A proven ability to produce high quality work to strict timetables.
