Dear All
At King’s we are looking to introduce an Attendance and Engagement Policy and are also considering the issue of adopting sanctions for students who fail consistently to attend or engage with their programme. Currently we have a regulation which allows for the removal of a student for lack of academic progress but this is only used in exceptional cases and we are considering introducing as part of the policy a scale of sanctions commensurate with the student’s level of non-attendance.
To get an understanding of what HEIs do in this regard I would be very grateful if you could answer the following questions;
1) Do you have an attendance policy?
2) What kind of attendance is monitored (tutorials, lectures etc)?
3) How is attendance monitored (eg register, swipe card, sign in sheets)?
4) At what point do you consider non-attendance to be an issue (eg 2 missed tutorials consecutively, less than 80% attendance) and what action do you take (meeting with Personal tutor, head of year etc)?
5) Do you use sanctions/penalties for students whose attendance does not improve despite interventions to address the issue?
6) What type of sanctions/penalties do you use?
Many thanks in advance for you time.
