A unique international documentary film festival is coming to The Watershed from the 16th-19th June 2015. Open to everyone, the RAI Film Fest will showcase more than 70 award-winning films from around the world made by ethnographic filmmakers, including Kim Longinotto<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/27-dreamcatcher-232>, Joshua Oppenheimer<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/45-the-look-of-silence-212>, David MacDougall<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/21-under-the-palace-wall-16>, and Phil Agland<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/14-baka-a-cry-from-the-rainforest-179>. Ethnography, put simply, is the study of human cultures through a long-term immersion in the lives of others. The ethnographic filmmakers featured here have produced thought-provoking films on topics as diverse as life after genocide<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/75-rwanda-life-goes-on-87> in Rwanda, the struggle of artists<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/29-kashmir-147> in Kashmir, the art of mud-building masons in Mali<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/38-masons-of-djenne-45>, to the experiences of a young dance troupe<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/52-life-in-progress-72> in a South African slum. They focus on the lives of a wide range of people including Swiss Yodellers<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/36-swiss-yodelling-30-years-later-97>, Capoeira dancers,<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/20-body-games-151> World of Warcraft gamers<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/91-virtual-me-gender-and-identity-in-world-of-warcraft-114> and the last travelling shepherd<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/69-the-last-shepherd-8> in Milan. The festival also includes several collaborative film-making experiments such as Eleven in Delwara<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/22-eleven-in-delwara-52>, with Douglas MacDougall, which presents the work of eleven year old filmmakers in an Indian village and Out of Focus<http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/programme/59-out-of-focus-3> about everyday life in a Mexican prison for minors made by the inmates. But what all the filmmakers in this unique festival have in common is a passionate commitment to understanding and revealing the perspectives of others through nuanced, ethical and in-depth filmmaking. Come and meet the world at the Watershed in June!
Tickets can be reserved through the festival's website: http://www.raifilmfest.org.uk/ where you can buy week or day passes. Tickets for individual screening sessions can also be purchased on the door on the day, subject to availability.
