Read More: Filmmaking for Fieldwork (F4F) is a way of exploring and presenting academic research about human behaviour in specific social contexts using a combination of scientific methods and artistic cinematography. Encounters with research subjects are recorded in the field using a camera and a microphone. Then, the material is edited by the researcher-filmmaker into a conceptual narrative that develops from the whole process of filmmaking.
Our practical courses focus on teaching technical principles as part of an ethnographic methodology that involves training in cinematography, sound recording, and narrative editing. Our pedagogy in filmmaking as research practice favours an immersive, hands-on approach. We guide our participants through structured workshops and use our own film-work to show different ways in which methods can be put to work (see www.allritesreversed.co.uk<http://www.allritesreversed.co.uk>). The most substantial parts of the course are the supported film projects, which are then watched and discussed in collective screenings.
